WHO WAS GURDJIEFF?
Gurdjieff was born in 1877 in Alexandropol near the Russian-Turkish border. He did not get satisfying answers to his questions concerning the meaning of life. At the same time he was convinced that there must exist an ancient knowledge which can be found here on Earth.
After almost twenty years of research he returned to Russia in 1912 and started teaching in order to show the possibility of man living in the “midst” of life. With the tool of ”work on oneself” he wanted to show how it is possible to ascend to a higher level of Being.
In 1922 near Paris, in Fountainbleu he established the institute called “The Harmonious Development of Man”. He visited the United States of America for the first time in 1924. In 1929 he moved to Paris from Fontainbleu, where he worked and wrote until his death in 1949.
