WHO WAS GURDJIEFF?
Gurdjieff was born in 1877 in Alexandropol (today Gumri). His father was Greek and his mother Armenian.
In his youth he did not get satisfying answers to his questions concerning the meaning of life. At the same time he was convinced that there must exist an ancient knowledge which can be found here on Earth.
After almost twenty years of research, he returned to Russia in 1912 and started teaching. His aim was to discover how it is possible to ascend to a higher level of Being with the tool of” work on oneself”.
In 1922 near Paris, in Fountainbleu he established the institute called “The Harmonious Development of Man”. He visited the United States of America for the first time in 1924. In 1929 he moved to Paris from Fontainbleau, where he was working, teaching and writing until his death in 1949.
